PRAYER OF JABEZ

1 Chronicles 4:9-10

New King James Version (NKJV)

9 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”

10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.

Questions:

  1. Jabez means____________________________________?

  1. Honorable means________________________________? Deuteronomy 5:16a: “Honor your father and mother as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long.”

  2. What does Bless mean?__________________________________ Genesis 39:3, 5b “And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. 'The Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field.”

  3. “Indeed” found in the NKJV sounds a lot like what______________________? Bruce Wilkinson author of “The Prayer of Jabez” says: “In my mind's eye, I picture Jabez standing before a massive gate recessed into a sky-high wall. Weighed down by the sorrow of his past and the dreariness of his present, he sees before him only impossibility-a future shut off. But raising his hands to heaven, he cries out, 'Father, oh Father! Please bless me! And what I really mean is...bless me a lot!'”

  4. Who is to direct the blessing?__________________________Wilkinson writes: “To bless in the biblical sense means to ask for or to impart supernatural favor. When we ask for God's blessing, we're not asking for more of what we could get for ourselves. We're crying out for the wonderful, unlimited goodness that only God has the power to know about or to give to us.” That kind of richness is like what Proverbs 10:22 says: “The Lord's blessing is our greatest wealth; all our work adds nothing to it.”

  5. Who will decide what the blessing will be?____________________

  6. Why should we ask for God's blessings?______________________Matthew 7:7 says: “Ask,” promised Jesus, “and it will be given you.” James 4:2 says: “You do not have because you do not ask.”

Discussion questions:

  1. When you were growing up, who gave you genuine affection and things that brought a sense of blessedness into your life? How many of those things were based upon your relationship with them, and how much upon fulfilling their expectations or requirements?

  2. During your lifetime, have you asked God to bless you very often? What would have to happen for you to feel comfortable regularly asking the Lord to pour out His blessings on your life?

  3. Read Matthew 7:7-11. If you fully embraced this is the way the Lord works, what would happen in your life?

  4. Do you have a wish list of blessings you like from the Lord?
